This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, record and mix a basic music demonstration (demo).

It applies to individuals who work collaboratively with performers to produce basic music recordings that are intended for limited circulation or reference purposes, rather than general public release.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

1. Clarify music demo requirements

1.1 Confirm the purpose of the music demo in consultation with relevant people

1.2 Contribute to the development of an appropriate recording plan

1.3 Agree on the method of, and format for, final recording

2. Record performers

2.1 Position performers, instruments and equipment for optimum sound quality

2.2 Check that equipment is installed and aligned correctly

2.3 Confirm that microphones are operational at all times

2.4 Route test signals to the correct signal path and check that level of test signal is correct

2.5 Create a headphone mix for performers

2.6 Capture sound sources according to the agreed recording method

3. Mix sound sources

3.1 Mix and balance sound sources to achieve required effect

3.2 Produce accurate transitions between sounds to achieve required effect

3.3 Apply effects and signal processing as required

3.4 Monitor levels according to safe work practices

3.5 Assess the quality of each recorded track, and evaluate overall mix against the purpose of the music demo

3.6 Confirm that the level of the mix is within technical limits and the required dynamic range

4. Finalise music demo

4.1 Assess mix on speakers that are appropriate to the end use of the music demo

4.2 Listen to overall mix with relevant people, and agree on any necessary adjustments

4.3 Produce a master that incorporates any adjustments and a backup copy in the agreed format

4.4 Complete recording documentation as required

4.5 Clean and restore recording location to pre-use condition

Evidence of the ability to:

collaborate with others to prepare basic recording plans

record, mix and finalise at least two basic music demos according to requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

list and briefly describe the components of a basic recording plan

describe the different types of equipment used to produce a music demo

explain the issues and challenges that typically arise when recording and mixing a basic music demo, and how to address them

outline the safe work practices that relate to the use of sound recording and mixing equipment.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

performers requiring a basic music demo

recording location

sound recording and mixing equipment.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
